Up to 40W? Charging Review of iPhone 16
Introduction
With the iPhone 16 series officially on sale, ChargerLAB got it as soon as possible. Every year, Apple’s press conference attracts a lot of attention. It has been rumored before that iPhone 16 supports 40W fast charging. Today, we will test whether it is true.
The iPhone 16 is equipped with the A18 Pro chip. Compared with the A16 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 15, the performance is improved across generations.
Product Appearance
The front of the box shows the appearance of the iPhone 16.
We got the Teal model, which has 128GB of storage.
The box contains the phone, cable, and some documents.
The iPhone 16 adopts a 6.1‑inch (diagonal) all‑screen Super Retina XDR display.
The iPhone 16 is available in five colors: Black, White, Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine. The one we got is Teal.
The camera module design of the iPhone 16 is arranged in a top-down manner. It uses a 48-megapixel fusion camera + 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera. And it adopts the sapphire crystal lens cover.
It adds a "Camera controls" button, which can realize various functions such as Exposure, Depth, Zoom, Cameras, Styles, Tone, etc., through different gestures such as tap, long press, double-click, and slide.
The USB-C port supports USB 2.0 data transfer specifications.
The plastic sheet of USB-C is teal, the same color as the case.
This is the included USB-C cable.
Consistent with previous iPhone 15 series cables, the woven outer layer twists the fibers into strands before arranging and weaving them together, preventing tangling and enhancing durability.
And the connector adopts a special pin design.
ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C shows it doesn't have an E-marker chip.
The length of this cable is exactly 1m (3' 3.37'').
The length of the phone is about 148 mm (5.83 inches).
The width is about 72 mm (2.83 inches).
The thickness is about 7.7 mm (0.3 inches).
The weight is about 169.6 g (5.98 oz), which is about 1.6 g (0.056 oz) lighter than the iPhone 15.
The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display and a compact body that can be held in one hand.
Compatibility Test
Next, let’s see its charging compatibility.
Original Chargers
We use some Apple chargers with the original cable to test the real-time power.
Charge with the original 20W charger (model: A2940), the power is about 8.66V 2.19A 18.95W.
There are no compatibility issues.
We summarize the test results into a bar chart. Among them, Apple chargers above 29W can reach 15V PDO, which is also the biggest difference between this generation and the previous generation 15 series. It can be seen that the iPhone 16 supports the PD protocol. Except for the influence of the maximum power of the charger, its charging power is about 23W.
Third-party Chargers
We also used a variety of third-party chargers with the original cable during the test. Let’s take a look at the results.
There are no compatibility issues.
We summarize the test results into a bar chart. The actual charging power of most chargers is around 23-24W. Chargers that support the 20W PD protocol can reach about 19W. The compatibility performance is quite impressive.
Wireless Charging Test
It's worth noting that the iPhone 16 series, in addition to supporting the existing MagSafe charging, also supports the Qi2 wireless charging standard.
When charging the iPhone 16 with the Apple MagSafe Charger, the power at the phone end is about 8.95V 1.92A 17.83W.
When charging the iPhone 16 with the third-party wireless magnetic charger, the power at the phone end is about 6.4W.
Reverse Charging Test
The iPhone 16 series has a reverse charging function, allowing it to charge several devices.
Use a 5A USB-C to USB-C cable to connect the iPhone 16 and AirPods Pro. You can see that the earphone charging indicator lights up. The measured output power on the phone is 5.20V 0.25A 1.32W.
Full Charging Test
Next, we'll use the Apple 70W charger to fully charge the iPhone 16. And put them into a 25°C (77℉) thermotank throughout the test.
The voltage is around 15V at first, and the charging curve can be divided into five parts. In the first part, the peak power stayed at 21W for the first 16 mins. Then, the power gradually drops to 16W, 12W, and 7W in turn. Meanwhile, the voltage dropped to 5V at 55 mins. The final part begins at 1 hour and 6 mins, the power slowly drops to almost zero. At about 1 hour and 47 mins, the phone displays that the battery is fully charged, but charging is still ongoing. It takes 2 hours and 5 mins to be fully charged.
It is worth mentioning that the input voltage of the iPhone 16 has been increased from 9V to 15V compared with the previous generation. It can be seen that the maximum power can reach nearly 34W.
We also turn it into another curve. The charger can charge the iPhone 16 Pro to 50% in 26 mins. And it can reach 80% in 56 mins, 100% in 2 hours and 5 mins. The charging speed is not much different from the iPhone 15.
Temperature Test
We also recorded the highest temperature on the front and back after charging for 10 mins, 20 mins, and 30 mins.
10 Mins Charging
After 10 mins, the maximum temperature on the front is 30.3℃ (86.54 ℉).
The back is 31.2℃ (88.16 ℉).
20 Mins Charging
After 20 mins, the maximum temperature on the front increases to 32.1℃ (89.78 ℉).
And the back is 32.4℃ (90.32 ℉), you can see that except for the upper and lower ends, the temperature of the entire back panel is uniform.
30 Mins Charging
After 30 mins, the maximum temperature on the front drops to 31.1℃ (87.98 ℉).
The back is 31.6℃ (88.88 ℉).
From this bar graph, the highest temperature is about 32.4℃ (90.32 ℉) on the back at 20 mins. The temperature rise of the phone during charging is not obvious. The heat dissipation performance is very good, and you will only feel warm when you touch it during charging.
Summary of ChargerLAB
The iPhone 16 uses an aluminum alloy frame and a 6.1‑inch (diagonal) all‑screen Super Retina XDR display on the front. At the same time, the entire series is equipped with a "Camera controls" button, which can realize various functions such as Exposure, Depth, Zoom, Cameras, Styles, Tone, etc., through different gestures such as tap, long press, double-click, and slide. The USB-C port supports USB 2.0 data transfer specifications.
There are no compatibility issues. The maximum charging power of the iPhone 16 can reach about 24W. It takes 2 hours and 5 mins to be fully charged. Overall, the charging power of the iPhone 16 is still as conservative as ever compared to the previous generation. Although the power consumption performance of this generation has been liberalized, the charging power has not been significantly improved.
