The Perfect Fusion of Light and Power: IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp
Introduction
Previously, ChargerLAB has tested various magnetic wireless chargers for iPhones from different manufacturers. These chargers have performed well in terms of magnetic attraction and compatibility. However, wireless charging isn't exclusive to Apple, and IKEA has also introduced more than one product that supports wireless charging. One example is the IKEA SJÖMÄRKE wireless charger that we took apart a month ago. Today, we have another unique product, the IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp, which also supports wireless charging. Let's take a closer look at its practical operation and charging performance.
Product Introduction
The packaging box has a pure white background with the accessory printed on the upper left, and the outline of the lamp is on the right. The design is very simple, just like the wireless charger mentioned above.
After unpacking all the items from the packaging, aside from the wireless charging pad, there's a power adapter, lampshade, and product manual included.
The lamp boasts a stylish matte exterior coating that adds a touch of sophistication to its overall design.
At the top, there's an array of 12 LED beads, which could lead to a more even distribution of light, reducing the chances of glare or dark spots.
Press down on the top to release the internal core; after removing the battery cover screws, you can see the internal battery compartment.
The battery compartment accommodates four AA batteries, which means you can take it anywhere you want.
Once the translucent lampshade is combined with the lamp, it's ready for power.
The IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp is crafted from ABS material with a matte-treated gray-green shell. The left side serves as the lamp placement area, while the right side features two wireless charging zones with a "+" symbol, reminiscent of the SJÖMÄRKE wireless charger.
After inserting batteries, it can provide illumination while simultaneously powering two devices (such as headphones or phones) that support wireless charging.
Moreover, it has two LED indicator lights – they stay lit during normal charging and turn off once charging is complete.
Additionally, you can charge the lamp's internal battery (if it's rechargeable). While charging, the button on the power switch lights up in red; when charging is complete, it turns green; and in case of a malfunction, it blinks.
Semi-circular rubber foot pads are positioned on both sides of the base, ensuring stability and preventing any unwanted sliding or movement.
The bottom features a label with specifications. The model is E2021 BETTORP, with an input power of 19W and dual 5W outputs. Furthermore, it has passed multiple certifications.
The input cable, crafted from a durable woven material, features a not detachable design. While this design choice ensures a streamlined aesthetic, it may not be ideal for prolonged use, as a broken cable would render the entire device unusable.
On the other side, there's a DC connector.
Additionally, the included charger adheres to IKEA's classic style. It's identical to the one that came with the previously reviewed SJÖMÄRKE wireless charger, so we won't go into further detail this time.
The length of the wireless charging pad is about 26cm (10.24 inches).
The width is about 80mm (3.15 inches).
And the height is about 13mm (0.51 inches).
The weight is about 211g (7.44 oz).
And the weight of the lamp and the lampshade (without batteries) is about 362g (12.77 oz).
User Experience
As you can see, thanks to its transparent lampshade design, the light emitted by the IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp is very gentle, making it a perfect fit for use on a computer desk alongside electronic devices.
At the same time, it can provide power to wireless charging-enabled phones, granting you the convenience of starting your day with a fully charged smartphone. Furthermore, its gray color scheme also complements the cool tones of the Mac mini and the common white desktops found in homes.
Furthermore, even without loading batteries, the wireless charging area can power the lamp for illumination, while the other area can function for normal wireless charging.
Charging Test
Upon connecting the power supply without charging any devices, the DC power meter records an input power of 0.42W for the charger.
When powering the lamp and adjusting it to the highest brightness level, the measured power consumption is 3.77W.
Charging a Samsung S23+ results in a power of 7.55W.
Simultaneously charging an iPhone 14 Pro and a Samsung S23+ registers an input power of 15.46W. Considering energy losses, the total power reaching the phones should be close to the advertised 10W.
Charging AirPods 3 yields a power of 2.93W.
Full Charging Test
Next, let's try to test how long it will take to fully charge the iPhone 14 Pro using one of the wireless charging pads. The test will be conducted under the following conditions: constant temperature of 25℃ (77℉). Here is the charging curve made by ChargerLAB.
The charging power maintains minimal fluctuations. Charging the iPhone 14 Pro to 50% takes 1 hour and 37 minutes, reaching 80% takes 2 hours and 37 minutes, and hitting 98% requires 3 hours and 13 minutes. The charging power hovers around 8W throughout the process, and it stops automatically at 98% charge, which is practical for a product often used while sleeping.
Temperature Test
While examining its charging curve, we also recorded its maximum surface temperature after one hour of charging.
After an hour, using a thermal imaging camera, the highest temperature recorded while IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp was charging the iPhone 14 Pro is 35.3°C. It's slightly warm to touch and doesn't exhibit any significant overheating issues.
Summary of ChargerLAB
In conclusion, the IKEA Bettorp LED Lamp features a lamp unit with a battery compartment and two wireless charging zones, allowing for a dual experience of both illumination and charging. Additionally, the lamp itself supports wireless charging functionality. With a rechargeable battery loaded, it can supply power to the battery while also providing illumination.
In our wireless charging test, the supported power of the wireless charging zones is around 5W. This is sufficient to power electric devices like headphones and smartphones. While the power output isn't particularly high, it's quite suitable for bedside use. After a night's rest, you can wake up to fully charged devices, offering a convenient and satisfying experience.
Overall, this lamp seamlessly integrates lighting and wireless charging, along with the added capability of accommodating a battery. It doesn't compromise the wireless charging space and is specifically designed for nighttime use.
