Teardown Report: ANKER Latest 20W PD Fast Charger
After many of Apple's mobile phones no longer have standard chargers, the fast charging market appears to be thriving, but it is often accompanied by fierce competition. Anker's Nano 20W PD charger has captured the hearts of a large number of consumers with its compact and exquisite appearance. The monthly sales have exceeded 60,000 and achieved good results in the 20W fast charging competition.
Recently, Anker has released another new 20W PD quick charger, which is not only equipped with foldable pins, but also has a cheap price ($25). This product is obviously emphasize the portability and low price.
ChrgerLAB will disassemble this charger to see the materials and quality of the product.
1. The appearance of Anker 20W PD quick charger
The packaging adopts the classic blue and white color, the front design is simple, just the ANKER brand is printed.
The three features and parameters of the product are printed on the back.
The package contains the charger, instruction manual, warranty card, etc.
The charger uses a PC flame-retardant and white shell with rounded corners. The middle and top surface has been totally frosted, and only the edge will be smooth.
Charger information is marked on the input shell
Model: A2632
Input: 100-240V~50HZ 0.6A
Output: 5V3A, 9V2.22A
Anker Innovation Technology Co., Ltd.
The product has passed CCC certification.
The input side adopts foldable standard pins, which is convenient to carry and will not scratch other equipment in the bag.
The ANKER and PowerIQ 3.0 logos are printed on the top of the output, the USB-C port is centered, and the blue receptacle does not expose copper.
The length of the charger is measured to be 39.96mm using a vernier caliper.
The width is 33.24mm.
The thickness is 38.44mm.
Compared with Apple's 20W charger, the charger is slightly smaller.
The feeling of holding the charger in your hand.
The net weight is about 55g.
Use ChargerLAB POWER-Z KT002 to detect the output protocol of the USB-C port, and show that it supports Apple 2.4A, Samsung 5V2A and DCP protocols, as well as QC2.0, QC3.0, PD3.0 fast charging protocols.
Except the PDO message shows that the USB-C port also has two fixed voltage gears of 5V 3A and 9V 2.22A.
2. Teardown of Anker 20W PD quick charger
Disassemble the input shell, and fix the pins with plastic plates and tape for insulation.
This is the front side of the PCB board. The small board where the USB-C female is located crosses the entire motherboard and divided into two areas. The transformer occupies one of the areas. There is an isolation plate between the high and low voltage capacitors, and the high voltage capacitor is also covered with an insulating tube.
This is the front side of the PCB board, you can see the rectifier bridge and the secondary synchronous rectifier chip.
After the observation, we can find that Anker’s 20W PD quick charger adopts a switching power with wide-range output, which is controlled by the protocol chip, and the design architecture of the output voltage feedback through the optocoupler.
Let's introduce the materials of this product one by one, start with the input side.

The transformer is placed on the other side, and the entire one is insulated with tape and reinforced with glue.
Solid capacitors are wrapped with insulating tape.
After remove the small board, and the main control chip, optocoupler and protocol chip are installed on the front side.
There is an output VBUS switch tube on the back, the main control chip which corresponds to it has exposed copper and tinned to enhance heat dissipation.
The charger main control chip adopts Angbao OB2631U, which integrates DCM PWM controller and high voltage switch tube, which is optimized for high performance, low standby power consumption and low cost of switching power. In addition, it provides complete protection functions, including cycle-by-cycle current limit, overload protection, undervoltage lockout and internal overheat protection. It's suitable for PD adapters and other adapters with a wide output range.

SouthChip SC2002 is a highly integrated PD DFP controller. It complies with the
latest USB Type-C and PD 3.0 standards, and supports the most popular high-voltage fast charging protocols (including Huawei SCP and VOOC flash charging), supports up to 2 sets of DPDM ports, can support 1C1A applications on a single chip, and is widely used in walls chargers, car chargers and power strips that support USB fast charging.
At the same time, SouthChip SC2002 supports a very wide operating voltage range, up to 30V, without additional LDO. Through the integration of USB PD baseband physical layer (PHY), Type-C detection, voltage and current detection, 10-bit DAC VBUS adjustment, 10-bit ADC, voltage reference, VBUS voltage discharge path, NMOS driver, I2C interface and protection circuit, the external components can be minimized, system design can be more simple, and the cost of BOM can be lower. It provide highly flexible and cost-effective solutions for many applications.
SC2002 supports multiple protection mechanisms, including over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, over-current protection, short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, DP/DM pin over-voltage protection, CC pin over-voltage protection, etc., which effectively guarantees the stability and reliable of the system operation.
The output VBUS switch tube uses UBIQ's QN3102M3N, with a withstand voltage of 30V and a conduction resistance of 6.9mΩ.

After the completion of the teardown, let's take a "family portrait".
Summary of Teardown by LargerLAB
Most shell of this 20W charger from anker is frosted, the corners are rounded, and it is equipped with foldable pins, so the overall appearance has changed quite a lot. The charger supports QC and PD fast charging protocols, and has two voltage gears, 5V3A and 9V2.22A. It is also a targeted, portable and cost-effective product. So, its target will be iPhone users.
LargerLAB found from teardown that this charger uses a combination of two PCBs to be welded into a T-shaped structure, and components such as transformers and capacitors are glued and insulated. Angbao (昂宝) OB2631U+OB2004Z highly integrated switching power solution is adopted for wide-range output, and the protocol chip adopts Nanxin's SC2002 to control the output voltage. In addition, Aihua(艾华) electrolytic capacitors are used for high-voltage filtering and solid capacitors are used for output filtering.
