Teardown of Samsung 15W Faster Wireless Charger Duo (EP-P5400)
Introduction
Last year, Samsung introduced the 15W Faster Wireless Charger Duo for their S22 series of smartphones. This charging pad features two separate charging areas - one for charging the phone and the other for charging headphones or watches, depending on your personal preference. The charging status is displayed by three colored indicator lights, and you can even adjust the brightness of the indicator lights through your smartphone. So without further ado, let's go ahead and take it apart.
Product Appearance
The appearance diagram of the product is printed on the front of the box.
Some selling points are on the back.
The box includes the charging pad itself, a charger, a dual USB-C cable and some instructions.
The charger adopts a classic Samsung style.
The specs info are printed on the side. Model is EP-TA800. It can support input of 100-240V~ 50/60Hz, 0.7A, and the maximum output power is 25W. You can click the related article on the bottom to check out the teardown video of this charger.
Compared with the Apple 20W charger, the size is pretty similar.
The ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C shows the USB-C port supports PD3.0, QC4 and PPS protocols.
It also supports two fixed PDOs of 5V 3A and 9V 2.77A, and two PPS of 3.3-5.9V3A and 3.3-11V2.75A. It's worth noting that the actual PPS is a little bit different from the one printed on the side.
The dual USB-C cable also adopts the classic Samsung design.
And the length is about 1m (3' 3.37'').
The front panel of the charging pad adopts matte ABS, which is pretty smooth.
And the four shallow icons inside the red boxs represent supported devices. You can charge your phone and Galaxy Watch or your Galaxy Watch and earbuds at the same time.
Two indicator lights can show the working status.
It's equipped with a USB-C port, not a DC port.
Those grooves and ventilators on the back can greatly enhance its heat dissipation performance.
The model of this charging pad is EP-P5400, and the input is 9V 2.77A.
The length of the charging pad is about 156mm (6.14 inches).
The width is about 91mm (3.58 inches).
And the height is about 16mm (0.63 inches).
And the weight is about 168.5g (5.94 oz).
It's about the same lenght as the Galaxy S22+.
The POWER-Z KM003C shows that the power of the charging pad is 8.92V 0.07A 0.65W when not charging any devices.
Use it to charge Samsung S22+, the power is 8.72V 2.24A 19.56W.
Use it to charge Huawei P40 Pro, the power is 8.86V 0.85A 7.49W.
Use it to charge Airpods 3, the power is 8.91V 0.33A 2.93W.
Charge Airpods 3 and Samsung S22+ at the same time, the power is 8.74V 2.04A 17.75W.
Teardown
Next, let’s go ahead and take it apart.
There're four screws under four rubber pads to fix the back cover.
Remove them all.
This is how the grooves and ventilators look like from the inside.
We can see the PCBA module and cooling fan are fixed by multiple screws, and the fan is connected to the PCBA module through the red and black wires.
Remove the remaining screws.
Then remove the cooling fan.
It is from Toshiba, spec is 5V 0.31A.
The USB-C connector is fixed by two screws.
Next, remove the PCBA module.
Most components are on one side, including the master controller, MCU, synchronous buck-boost converter, buck IC, inductor, etc.
The back is much simpler with a half bridge driver.
This is the MCU from ABOV, used to control the wireless charging distribution. It has passed the PD3.0 certification and can be seen in many Samsung charging accessories. Model is 94B428.
This is one of the master control chips.
And this is another one. Those two master control chips for two wireless charging circuits are from Renesas, they integrate the MOSFET driver to simplify the circuit. Model is IDTP9236.
This is an external 8MHz crystal oscillator.
This is one of the external memories.
And this is another one. They're for those two master control chips.
The synchronous buck-boost converter is from MPS and adopts QFN3 x 3-16 package. It integrates MOSFET, and the maximum output current is 3A. Model is MP28167-A.
The 2.2μH alloy inductor can cooperate with the buck-boost converter.
Those four MOSFETs for phone wireless charging are from Vergiga Semi and adopt PDFN3333 package. 30V 6.4mΩ. Model is VS3618AE.
Here is all the information about VS3618AE.
They can form an H-bridge circuit to drive the charging coil.
These five white NPO resonant capacitors are used for phone wireless charging.
Here is the control circuit for watch wireless charging, and those two MOSFETs are from Vergiga Semi, same model as the phone wireless charging. Model is VS3618AE.
Those three resonant capacitors are connected in parallel and work with two MOSFETs.
And here is the control circuit for earphones wireless charging. It's composed of three MOSFETs from Vergiga Semi and five resonant capacitors connected in parallel.
These two MOSFETs of the same model can form a half-bridge, working together with the half-bridge composed of four MOSFETs we mentioned above. Model is VS3618AE.
The Samsung customized chip is marked with S3FW6MA.
Another buck chip is used for low-power wireless charging.
So is this 6.8μH alloy inductor.
And this buck chip marked with CC is used to power the master control chip.
So is this 6.8μH alloy inductor.
The plastic sheet inside the USB-C connector is black.
This tiny chip is used for input overcurrent protection.
The fan speed controller is from Global Mixed-mode G761, it can support open-loop and closed-loop fan speed control.
Two indicator lights are pasted with black foam.
The half bridge driver is from DIODES, which is used to drive the MOSFETs. Model is DGD0590A.
There're even more screws inside the device.
Remove the screws.
The inner coil is used to charge earphones ,and the outer coil is used to charge the watch.
The magnet inside is used to attract the watch.
One last look at all the components of this 15W Faster Wireless Charger Duo from Samsung.
