Simple Test of HP 4.5mm and USB Dock Adapter
Introduction
Just a short while ago, USB-A to USB-C cables were the most commonly used cables among ordinary consumers. However, with the powerful performance and smaller size of USB-C ports, they are becoming increasingly popular. This means that if you only carry dual USB-C cables and have an old laptop without USB-C ports, you won't be able to transfer files via cable.
However, recently, ChargerLAB published a teardown article for the HP 4.5mm and USB Dock Adapter (HSA-B006), which conveniently addresses the aforementioned issue by converting the USB-A port on your computer to USB-C. Next, let's give it a simple test.
Product Appearance
This adapter is compact and flat, with a short USB and 4.5mm DC extension cable.
One of the extension cables terminates in a USB-A port, featuring an independent 9-pin design. It is officially stated to support the USB 3.0 transmission.
The other extension cable terminates in an HP-style old-fashioned 4.5mm port, which is now rarely seen on modern devices and is primarily used as a power supply port.
And the big HP logo is engraved on the adapter.
All the specs info are printed on the back. Model is HSA-B006, it can support input of 20V3A, and the output can be up to 20V2.5A. It has passed CE, FCC, CP, VCCI, EAC, RCM, UL, KC certification.
The USB-C port with 24 pins is located at the bottom, as advertised by the official promotion, it can be used to connect to a docking station to achieve functions such as network sharing and display expansion.
The extension cable lengths are approximately 16cm (6.30 inches) and 9cm (3.54 inches) respectively.
And the weighs is just about 24g (0.85 oz).
Simple Test
Next, let's conduct a simple test, setting aside all the complex data.
When connected to an old PC and a Redmi K50, using this adapter, the phone can be recognized normally, and a pop-up window appears with options for charging, file transfer, and photo access.
It also works well when connecting to an SSD enclosure for data transfer. Additionally, it can be used to connect to a docking station for network sharing, expanding displays (although it doesn't support high-resolution or high-refresh-rate displays), and accessing TF cards, among other functions.
Summary of ChargerLAB
While HP's adapter is designed to support charging ports on older laptops, it performs impressively in the current era, with the tested USB-A port exhibiting USB 3.0 transfer capabilities and performing well in file transfers.
Currently discontinued, this product is becoming increasingly rare in the market. Despite its limitations in port compatibility, it serves as a standout product, enabling features like video expansion and network sharing through docking stations, making it a standout in the previous era.
