Review of MOMAX Airbox Charging Station(A Foldable Power Bank)
Introduction
Recently, ChargerLAB got an Airbox, a foldable wireless charging station from MOMAX, which is currently the first foldable power bank on the market. Let's have a detailed review.
The Airbox
The charging station is packaged in a pure white box. The front of the package is printed with the appearance and the display scenario of the compatible devices; the upper left corner is the product name of MOMAX Airbox; the lower left corner is the mark of supporting Apple Watch Series 1-5; the lower right corner are the Apple MFW certification and Qi wireless charging certification.
The parameters of the charging station are printed on the side of the package.
There is a black lid and base box inside the package with the logo of MOMAX on its front.
The top layer inside is the attached white storage bag.
The charging station is in the middle, fixed in a transparent plastic case.
There are the storage bag, charging station, multilingual manual, warranty card and the included A to C charging cable.
The Airbox charging station, whose front is printed with a gray logo of MOMAX, is in a glossy white design.
There are the specifications printed on the back.
Model: MA01, Capacity: 10000mAh (38Wh), Wireless input: 10W MAX.
USB-C input: 5V3A, 9V2A; USB-C output: 5V3A, 9V2.22A.
Qi output: 10W, AirPods output: 5W, Watch output: 5W, Total output: 20W MAX.
The Airbox charging station supports wired and wireless charging, with a wireless charging icon printed on the back.
It adopts a hinge like a laptop, with a fully expanded angle of 180°.
There are a charging port, power switch and LED indicator in the lower part.
The USB-C port can output and be input with a black USB-C receptacle. There are seven LED indicators in the middle. The first green indicator keeps on; the second is the wireless charging orange indicator; the third is the AirPods orange indicator, and the remaining four are white power indicators. On the right side is the power switch button, and a long press will make it close.
Unfold the Airbox charging station.
The lower left corner is the wireless charging area for AirPods, which can be placed entirely without the case and stored in the station. Above the area is the Apple Pencil storage slot.
The lower right corner is the wireless charging area for the Watch.
The Watch charging bracket can stand upright and be folded at an angle of up to 90°.
The upper is the wireless charging area with a wireless charging icon, and the left and right sides are recessed for more convenient storage.
It comes with a white A to C charging cable, fixed with a rubber band.
Its size is about 184.3 X 80.37 X 32.67 mm (7.25 X 3.16 X 1.28 inches).
The weight is about 390.5g (13.77oz).
It looks a little bit large in hand.
Protocols
The ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM002C finds that the USB-C port supports AFC, QC3.0 and PD3.0 charging protocols.
It supports two fixed PDOs of 5V2.4A and 9V2.22A.
Review
Compatibility Test
ChargerLAB will use tens of devices for compatibility testing to present readers with the most accurate data.
It is 9.01V 2.16A 19.42W when the USB-C port supporting 20W fast charging is charging the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Here comes the charging compatibility test of MOMAX Airbox. The Apple devices can be charged at the maximum power level.
ChargerLAB's histogram shows the charging power of each product directly. The Apple devices have the highest power.
Simultaneous Charging and Discharging Test
Let's test whether the MOMAX Airbox supports simultaneous charging and discharging.
The test shows that it can be charged through the USB-C port while charging an iPhone wirelessly, working normally. It supports simultaneous charging and discharging.
Remove the phone and place the Apple Watch on the station, and it is tested to charge normally.
The AirPods Pro can also be charged in the wireless charging area.
The AirPods Pro and Apple Watch can be charged wirelessly at the same time.
Lastly, the iPhone, AirPods Pro and Apple Watch can also be charged wirelessly simultaneously.
Full Self-charging Test
Since the Airbox can be used as a power bank, we had a full self-charging test, using the Apple 20W charger to charge it.
The input power was about 18W before 55 minutes. The charging ended at 2 hours and 10 minutes with a maximum power of 8.66V 2.11A 18.31W.
Output Efficiency Test
Output efficiency is an important factor of the power bank. The efficiency in different outputs is different. The higher the efficiency, the higher the conversion rate, and the lower heat.
First, let the power bank output at 5V3A 15W continuously and end at 1 hour and 32 minutes. The actual battery energy discharged is about 24.4424Wh, so the efficiency at 5V3A 15W power output is about 24.4424/38=64.32%.
Then, make the power bank output at 9V2.22A 20W and end at 51 minutes. The actual battery energy discharged is about 17.105Wh, so the efficiency at 9V2.22A 20W power output is about 17.105/38=45.01%.
The output efficiency test is to make the Airbox be in a limit state. The output power will not continue at a 15W and 20W output and will inevitably decrease with the increase of phone power. So the above output efficiency is for reference only. The output efficiency in daily use will be higher than in the test.
Temperature Test
The MOMAX Airbox has two modes of unfolding and closing, so the temperature will be tested separately in two conditions.
We'll put it into a 25°C thermotank throughout the test and let it run for half an hour with the power of 9V2.22A 20W.
When closed, the maximum temperature of the power bank's surface was 63.4℃ (146.12℉) after half an hour.
After turning it over, the maximum temperature of the power bank's surface was 48.5℃ (119.3℉).
When unfolded, the maximum temperature of the power bank's surface was 61.9℃ (143.42℉) after half an hour.
After turning it over, the maximum temperature of the power bank's surface was 56.3℃ (133.34℉).
Just like the output efficiency test, in daily use, the temperature will be lower than in the test.
