In the fourth quarter of 2016, Xiaomi released its “Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 2 10000mAh” and “Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 2 20000mAh”. The second generation power bank have received positive market feedbacks in the past year. Following that, Xiaomi launched the “Xiaomi Power Bank 2C” with a retail price of approximately USD $23 in September 2017. After the Xiaomi Power Bank 2C, the new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 10000mAh was launched in December, priced at approximately USD $12. Today, we are going to take a closer look at the latest version.
The New Xiaomi Power Bank 2 comes with a simple white packaging. The product name “New Xiaomi Power Bank 2″ (10000mAh) is printed on the front.
Relevant information is printed on the back. The New Xiaomi Power Bank 2 (10000MAH), product model: PLM09ZM; capacity: 10000mAh 3.7V (37WH), rated Capacity: 6500mAh 5.1V (Typ 1A), input interface: Micro-USB, Output interface: USB-A, input parameters: 5v2.0a/9v2.0a/12v1.5a, output parameters: 2x 5.1v2.4a/9v1.6a max/12v1.2a MAX, Product size: 147 x 71.2 x 14.2mm, Manufacturer: Jiangsu Zimi Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.
The package comes with a power bank, a Micro-USB cable, and a user’s manual.
All Xiaomi power banks come with a dust protection film the New Xiaomi Power Bank 2 is no different.
For comparison, we have the 2016 version on the left (black) and the latest Xiaomi Power Bank 2 on the right. The most significant feature of the new power bank is its mega size. The older version was 130mm long and the new one is measured at 147mm.
There is no significant difference in the width. The older version is 71mm whereas the newer one is at 71.2mm.
The older version weights 218g and the new one weights 240g.
The most significant difference between the two power banks is their USD output. The new one features dual USB ports, allowing users to charge two devices at the same time.
Let’s take a look at the specs of the old model:
- Input voltage：5V2.0A 9V/12V 18W
- Output voltage：5.1V2.4A 9V/12V 15W
- Capacity：10000mAh 38.5Wh
- Rated capacity：6900mah
- Conversion rate: over 90%.
New Xiaomi Power Bank:
- Input voltage：5V2.0A 9V2.0A 12V1.5A
- Output voltage：2x 5.1V2.4A 9V1.6A MAX 12V1.2A MAX
- Capacity：10000mAh 37Wh
- Rated capacity：6500mah
- Conversion rate: over 90%.
It is worth mentioning that the conversion efficiency and the USB efficiency are not the same, since different devices may have different charge efficiency. Because of this, the value of the USB efficiency will be 1% -3% lower than the conversion efficiency. There is no real difference between the widths of two power banks, however, the new model is slightly longer than a cellphone.
The new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 is made from a single piece of aluminium, available in two colors (black and silver). A “Mi” logo is printed on the front.
The new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 features dual USB-A ports and supports QC2.0 fast charging via MicroUSB. The LED lights show the current battery capacity and power button is on the right.
The “mi” logo can be found inside the output port, a customized USB-A logo trademark of Xiaomi for anti-counterfeiting.
We use a ChargerLAB Power-Z FL001 USB to inspect the output voltage of the new Xiaomi Power Bank 2. Both USB-A port offers a voltage of 12V 1.5A/9V 2A/5V 2A（QC2.0 Fast Charge）and the power supply also has a circuit that supplies 5 volts. However, there are differences in the standby voltage between the two USB ports, the outer port has a circuit of 5.13V while the inner port has 4.97V.
Dismantling it for a closer look
To dismantle the new Xiaomi Power Bank 2, you need to remove the aluminium case.
Then, you will see two screws that hold the PCB in place. The cross-shaped screws firmly hold the plastic housing and the PCB together.
Loosen the screws and remove the plastic housing to take it a part.
The plastic housing has been extended to provide a buffer space, protecting the battery with a sponge cushion tape.
The new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 uses a 4.2V conventional monolithic lithium cell, manufactured by Tianjin Lishen Battery, with a capacity of 10000mAh( 37Wh). The batch number is N22.
In order to get a more accurate measurement, the NTC temperature was probe in direct contact with the battery.
Double-sided adhesive tape firmly holds the plastic housing.
The plastic housing is made from ABS+PC.
The ZMJ F8216AUBN, a microcontroller developed by Zimi Electronic Technology, is different from the previous 20-pin microcontroller.
Siyin ZMY6K, Fast Charging chip
Both outputs have their short circuit protections.
Xiaomi customized a high-quality copper USB-A output socket.
The new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 as well as the older models are both priced at USD $12. However, the new model features a micro USB + dual USB-A, allowing the user to charge multiple devices at once. Although the new Xiaomi Power Bank 2 and Xiaomi Power Bank 2 both use the lithium battery manufactured by Tianjin Lishen, the old model uses the M74 4.4V 38.5Wh high-density lithium battery while the new Xiaomi Power Bank uses conventional voltage lithium N22 4.2V 37Wh. The new one also features dual USB-A ports and a bigger PCB, resulting in a 17mm length increase when compared to the old model.
